CHOOSING THE RIGHT SLEEPING BAG - DECISIVE FOR YOUR MISSION
Choosing the right sleeping bag can make the difference between comfort, performance and even survival - especially for tactical operations, survival missions or long outdoor adventures.
Whether you are fighting your way through damp jungles, crossing icy mountain landscapes or preparing for a military operation - here you can find out which sleeping bag is right for your area of operation.

UNDERSTANDING TEMPERATURE RANGES

Every sleeping bag has a so-called comfort, limit and extreme temperature range. When buying a sleeping bag, the comfort temperature Comf. limit should always be used as a guide.
- T COMF: This value is calculated for a “standard woman” (25 years old, 60 kg, 1.60 m) who is not yet cold.
- T LIM: This value is calculated for a “standard woman” (25 years old, 60 kg, 1.60 m) who is not yet cold.this value is calculated for a “standard man” (25 years old, 70 kg, 1.73 m) who is not yet cold.
- T EXT: This value is calculated for a “standard woman” (25 years, 60 kg, 1.60 m) under severe cold stress. There is an increased risk of hypothermia here.

Important selection criteria for tactical and survival applications

1. Insulation Material:
- Synthetic Insulation Fiber (G-LOFT®): Better in damp conditions, dries quickly and remains thermally efficient even when wet. Recommended for military use.
-
Down: Extremely warm, light and compressible, but sensitive to moisture. Suitable for expedition sleeping bags such as the D1200X.
2. Shape & Purpose:
-
Mummy Sleeping Bag: Close-fitting, ideal for heat retention. Military proven models: Defence 4, Defence 6, Survival One.
-
Rectangular sleeping bag: More freedom of movement, but less suitable for tactical use.
-
Special shapes: Sleeping bags such as the Wilderness (-12°C / -32°C), which can be worn as a coat, are ideal for surveillance missions or bivouacs without a tent.
3. Weight & Pack Size:
Depending on the mission, weight is crucial. Lightweight models such as the SOF series (Special Operations Forces) offer maximum mobility for rapid deployment.
4. Additional Features for Military Applications:
-
Mosquito Net (e.g. Tropen) for warm and humid regions.
-
Two-Way Zipper for rapid ventilation and flexible temperature regulation.
-
Water-repellent Outer Material (e.g. Defence-Series) protection against moisture and wind.
-
Camo Colors & Patterns – Many sleeping bags are available in inconspicuous olive or camouflage colors for military use.

Care and maintenance of sleeping bags

The sleeping bag should be aired at every opportunity, but at the latest after every tour, because the moisture that the body releases overnight reduces the insulating power and causes an unpleasant odor in the long term.
Every product needs appropriate care. You should only wash your sleeping bag when it is really necessary. Before washing, push all zipper sliders into the zipper garages as far as they will go and close all press studs and Velcro fasteners.
Preventive care:
- Use a CARINTHIA Liner to protect the sleeping bag and minimize cleaning.
- Air out the sleeping bag thoroughly after each use to avoid moisture and odors.
- Remove small stains with a damp cloth and special detergent before a complete wash is necessary.
Washing & Drying:
- G-LOFT® sleeping bags are suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Please follow the washing instructions on the care label. Gentle wash cycle (max. 30°C) and low spin speed (max. 500 rpm) are recommended in most cases.
- Do not use fabric softener! It can have a negative effect on the insulation performance.
- Tumble dry at a low temperature or air dry (not in direct sunlight!).
With the right care, your CARINTHIA sleeping bag will stay ready for use and perform well - no matter what conditions you are out and about in.

Correct sleeping bag size

How to choose the right sleeping bag size?

How G-LOFT® insulation works?

G-LOFT® is a synthetic insulation fiber that combines the advantages of down and synthetics. It offers high thermal performance, is lightweight, breathable and retains its insulating properties even when damp.
Can I combine my sleeping bag with other CARINTHIA products?
Yes, many CARINTHIA sleeping bags are combinable and can be supplemented with liners or bivouac bags to extend the temperature range or provide additional protection.
